Happy Mother’s Day from Aggie and the Team!

Aggie writes…

I remember the day I became a mother for the first time.

I remember the months before as I watched my baby growing from a tiny poppy seed to a big magic bean, and eventually developing a face I could recognise myself in. I remember the joy of seeing my growing child through scans every few months and watching her and her changing body, her hands sometimes in a thumbs-up, other times with thumb and index finger touching, saying, “I’m A-ok, Mom.”

In the beginning, raising a newborn is incredibly hard. Even when people tell you it’s going to be exhausting, you still think, as an optimistic mother-to-be, that you will cope just fine, and that love will get you through. But there are times in the journey when you need help, when you need your own mother to support you, to hold you, to take over caring for little one. Even after years, there are times when you need your mother, or your grandmother, aunt, best friend, a woman’s touch to help raise your child through their moments of intense emotion and energy.

As exhausting for the heart, body and mind as being a mother is, it is still the greatest gift and privilege on Earth.

Realising what your own mother, or grandmother, or step-mother, or foster mother, went through to give you the best she could, this is when you step into true gratitude, forgiveness, understanding and compassion.

Most times, all your child needs is your time, your presence, patience, your kind eyes and words, gentle hands, smiles to show them that they make you happy. That they’re the funniest, bravest, smartest kid you ever did meet. That you love them even when they fling sticks at you, even when they don’t listen and throw their dinner all over the floor. They need to know that you love them even when you can’t laugh, even when you’re tired and sad. Find ways to give them your time, as much as you can give them.

Love, Aggie
