In the Company of Cheerful Tea Lovers!
This week we’ll be starting with tea & coffee! Our staples, no matter where in the world you are! The first (Royal Chundu Homeschool Lesson #42) is How To Make Tonga Tea, Village Style!
Wonderful friend, Mama & Lodge Waitress, Chipo shows us how to make village-style Tonga tea over the coals in our River Lodge boma and using all local products. The milk is sourced from local cows and the tea leaves from Kawambwa Tea Estate in the Luapula Province in Zambia ~ thereby supporting a local tea plantation and its workers.
Chipo boils the milk and water in the pot, adds tea leaves and sugar and the strains the tea into a cup for serving. Because Tonga families tend to be big, this pot will be able to serve many people.
This is our tea ritual and like all tea rituals, the process of making is part of the pleasure, a slowing down and focusing on the task at hand, care given to the ingredients and the creation, often with family gathered round for company and socialising. And now… for the tasting!
We welcome you to try this lesson for yourself! Or let us make you a cup at the lodge.
