“Certainly travel is more than the seeing of sights, it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard
If a stranger in a coffee shop slipped you an envelope with the words “free holiday” penned on the front, how might you react?
I know I would smoothly slip it into my pocket the way I do when I spot a R200 note lying in my path on the pavement. After looking around for a possible owner, of course, but trotting off normally, as hastily but unsuspiciously as possible, to spend it before someone can catch me to pat me down. I tell myself, I deserve this lucky break. Thank you, Universe, I say, in the same way that I wouldn’t question for a second ripping open an envelope inviting me on a free vacation.
The point is less about my underhandedness as a human and more about holidays being like prizes. Wonderful, glorious gifts that speak to my definition of the purpose of life – or one of them. Travel. I love it. I want to explore as much of Earth as possible before a different kind of stranger approaches me one dark and stormy night.
Other than for pleasure and exploration of new foods, cultures and landscapes, it turns out that travel is really good for you – for your health and well-being. I’ve kept the infographic from Easytobook.com below by my side for a year now to serve as a reminder. If you need a reason to get away from work or family or yourself… here it is below.
